About the Artist

About the artist

Sonia Navarro is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice deeply engages with the textile arts and the legacy of traditional weaving as a form of cultural and feminine expression. Through her use of fabric, thread, and sewing techniques inherited from her family, Navarro reinterprets the domestic and artisanal labor historically associated with women, transforming it into a powerful conceptual and visual language.
Her work often transcends the boundaries of painting and sculpture, expanding into immersive installations that weave together memory, tradition, and identity. Navarro’s pieces explore the relationship between craftsmanship and contemporary art, reactivating ancestral practices such as weaving, embroidery, and the use of esparto grass as both aesthetic and political gestures.

Navarro’s outstanding trajectory has been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2024 Premio Alfonso X de Pintura y Escultura and the 2023 BMW Painting Award which was presented to her by Queen Sofía of Spain. She has also been the recipient of prestigious residencies such as the Real Academia de España en Roma (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spain), and the Colegio de España at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris.

Her works are part of major public and private collections, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), the IVAM – Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, and the Royal Collection of the Netherlands, among others.
